Government in The Middle Colonies

One amazing thing we're learning about the middle colonies is, something called the bread basket. In the essay we are writing about important people in the government, Values and beliefs and last but not least important people. So step back and relax and listen to the essay.

The English Government

In 1664 the English government began when the England captured the Dutch colony of New Netherlands. The king gave this colony to his brother James, the Duke of York. James then became the colony's proprietor (someone who owns and controls all the land in a colony.)   James could now do what he wanted with the land. He kept part for himself and gave the rest to his friends John Berkeley and George Carteret.

There values and beliefs were religious freedom and the tolerance act. Penn helped and cooperated with the local Native Americans.

So that is what I wrote for the essay about the middle colonies. Do you agree about the values and beliefs that the colonists in the middle colonies had?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

INVENTOR

1706-1790

Benjamin Franklin was best known for his inventions such as the Battery, Bifocals and mostly for the Lightning Rod. He also played an important role of our independence.

My Biography

Greetings my name is Alex. I am a printer in England. My job is highly important because i supply the reading materials in the colony. I left my country because they did not believe in religious tolerance. My daily life consists of working long hours as a printer I do get some help from my apprentice Luc. My talents are being a writer then I got to be a publisher and last but not least I finally became a printer. In my community there are a lot of wealthy merchants and slave owners. Now after my book is finished I can sell it to the wealthy man who offered me a new pair of spectacles for a advertisement in the paper.

My Biography

My name is Luc St.Pierre, I am an apprentice to a printer named Alex. My work is important because I help tell people what is going on in the colony. I must work for Alex for 7 years until I can become a Journyman. I hope to be able to open my own print shop in the years to come. I'm from England but do miss it from time to time. I feel that the  things

I miss most are my friends that didn't come with me.

I do like this way of life that is here for me. I would like to someday move away from here and find a wonderful woman to start a family with. Alex is a great teacher I don't think I could get as far as I have come without him.

WILLIAM PENN

1644 -1728

Penn created the first planned city in the colonies. He called it Philadelphia, the city of 'brotherly love''. He wanted people in the colony of pennsylvania to live in peace.

JAMES, the DUKE OF YORK

James became the colonies proprietor because his brother the king of England gave him

the colony. He was able to do what ever he wanted with this land so he kept a large part and changed

its name to New York. Then he gave the rest to his two friends John Berkeley and George Carteret.

They divided the land in half and called them East Jersey and West Jersey. In 1702 they joined together and to form what is now known as New York.

Values and Beliefs

The range os religious beliefs in the Middle Colonies was more diverse than those of New England and the Southern Colonies. The Middle Colonies had a diverse population because their properties believed in religious tolerance. The proprietors did not care about religious beliefs as long as the colonists could pay for land. Religious tolerance and inexpensive land attracted people from many parts of Europe. Some came to get out of being punished for their beliefs. Others came to farm their own land.

However all came to find a better way of life. They also valued religious freedom given by William Penn.
